The
process of phishing, employing bogus e-mails to trick unwary customers
into revealing personal information, constitutes a major cause of worry
for
businesses. As phishing incidents continue to escalate, so too does
consumer wariness and distrust of online financial transactions and
commerce. In this article from CFO.com, the author examines how businesses,
especially those operating in the high-transaction business-to-consumer
environment, have to spend more time and resources dealing with the
repercussions of phishing. The severity of the problem, which is not
just limited to the United States, has also forced the Federal Bureau
of Investigation, the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Secret Service
to allocate significant resources to help prevent business identity
theft crimes. Experts on identity theft prevention also strongly recommend
that businesses include business identity theft response planning as
an integral part of their fraud detection and prevention programs in
order to mitigate any damages should a phisher target their enterprise.

Child
identity theft gaining in popularity
The rate of identity theft has increased dramatically over the past
few years; however, the newest twist is for identity thieves to target
children, using information such as a birth certificate or a social
security number. According to identity theft expert Roy Michael, as
many as 500,000 cases of child identity theft have been recorded over
the past five years, with half of those occurring in the past two years
alone. In many cases, personal information about a child is compromised
when the child registers for school or sports leagues. Unfortunately,
the theft is not usually discovered until years later when the child
grows up, applies for a loan or credit card and finds that they have
been victimized. For this reason, Michael recommends that parents carefully
guard the personal information of their children and run periodic credit
reports to ensure that their children’s information is not being
